What is USB-C™

★What is USB-C™ ?

・An emerging industry-standard 24-pin USB connector system allowing transport of data and power. It is distinguished by its horizontally symmetrical reversible connector. One USB-C™ port measuring 8.4 millimeters by 2.6 millimeters. This means it’s small enough to work for even the smallest peripheral devices.
・USB-C™ is not only a new development, but also a new standard. Its speed, ease of use, universality can be applied to all sorts of devices. With this much potential, USB-C™ is superior to existing USB connectors and cables.
・USB-C™ ports can also support a variety of different protocols using alternate modes, which allows you to have adapters that can output HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, or other types of connections from that single USB port.
・USB-C™ is the latest connector developed by the USB Implementers’ Forum (USB-IF), the group of companies that have developed, certified, and led the USB standard. It counts more than hundreds companies in its membership, including Apple, Dell, Intel, Microsoft, HP, and Samsung. This is the part of why USB-C™ has been so readily accepted by PC manufacturers.
・The USB-C™ PD specification is intertwined with USB Type-C™. A USB 2.0 connection provides up to 2.5 watts of power, the USB-C™ PD specification supported by USB-C™ ups this power delivery to 100 watts. It’s bi-directional, so a device can either receive or send power. And this power can be transferred at the same time the device is transmitting data across the connection.

★USB-C™ PD Features

・Reversible Connector: The connector is user friendly. Both ends of a USB cable are the same, allowing for reversible plug orientation. You don’t need to worry about plugging it in upside down as it will function both ways.
・Fast: Because USB-C™ PD is being built on the newest generation of USB 3.1, you can expect to see data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. That’s twice USB 3.0’s 5Gbps, and much more than the more common USB 2.0’s 480Mbps. It’s even got enough speed to power the video and audio of a 4K Ultra HD display.
・More Power: With up to 100 watts, or 3A of power, USB-C™ PD cables can power nearly everything. When a 15-inch laptop requires just around 60 watts of power, this means in the future it will be charged the way as phones are now.
・Truly universal: Not just happy to work with phones, tablets, laptops, or anything that traditionally connects via USB, USB-C™ PD is also at home across different operating systems like iOS, Android, Windows, Google and more.

★USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF)

USB-IF is a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus specification. Their website explains how and why USB-C™ is published, and provides cables / connector specification and characteristics information. In addition, you can find Mobileconn is one of the companies that obtained USB-IF certification.
